In-game artist Tad Ehrlich revealed in an interview that lighting and texture was used extensively to achieve the eerie look of the Vast Deep.

Each area also had its own inspiration. The Conservatory area sprung from a pillar concept while the Labs strove for a horror movie setting, dark and foreboding. Mr. Ehrlich also acknowledged the difficulty of creating an interesting cave area for the Vestigial Cella. His solution? Use depth and effects to spruce up the dull surroundings associated with caves. We also look forward to revisiting writings spread across the Vasty Deep dungeons—these could have a secret message, apparently, so tell us if you learn something new!
